On five happy habits

life coach PhilippinesIf I wasn’t in this stressful job…
If my boss cared more about the company and his people…
If I wasn’t doing this specific task…
If I moved into my own place…
If I owned the latest It bag…

I would be happier.

These were the many if-only thoughts that have crossed my mind through the years. But when I left the stressful job, acquired the latest must-have bag, moved and decorated my own place, I didn’t find myself significantly happier. Change came with its own stress. The stuff I acquired soon became just stuff. I got used to living where I did and the special glow that came with getting what you want soon faded.

It took many years to realize how to create my own happiness without waiting for external circumstances to dictate my emotions.

Aside from realizing that happiness is a choice, here are five happy habits that I currently cultivate:

1. Gratitude (and prayer)

“Happiness cannot be traveled to, owned, earned, worn or consumed. Happiness is the spiritual experience of living every minute with love, grace, and gratitude.”—Denis Waitley

A gratitude journal and prayers (of thanksgiving and trust) are two powerful practices that shift my mindset from lack into abundance and joy.

2. Movement

Truth: You never feel bad after a workout.

It is incredibly difficult to motivate myself to exercise. I’ve found that remembering the post-workout feeling (including how pleasurable a cold shower can be) is another way to get me to roll out my yoga mat.

3. Meditation

Grounding into the present moment. Centering myself. Connecting to the quiet. A 10-minute meditation is my favorite way to start the day.

4. Challenge

Routine and boredom affect my mood significantly. I challenge myself to do stuff that I don’t normally do. I do 30-day challenges (for journaling, Instagram, yoga and writing). I reach out to people I’m too shy to talk to. I think of crazy ideas (like holding my own retreat) and take small steps to make them happen.

5. People

I don’t allow myself to get lonely, despite this journey of solo-preneurship. I put my work aside every afternoon to pick up my daughter and make time for her homework. Weekly lunches with friends are a must. I’ve set up a monthly Mastermind with other female entrepreneurs so we can encourage and hold each other accountable.

How about you: what are your happy habits?
