I’m changing my story

I’ve always considered July a meh month.

No momentous occasions. The start of the rainy season. Not even a holiday to break up its 31-day length. Back in the pre-COVID era, children would have settled into their school routine and work would just be plodding along.

This year, I decided to change my story about July—from meh to marvelous, from interminable to inspired.

I’m embarking on a 30-day creative challenge with a friend. We work on a daily creative project—no time minimum, any medium, your own definition of creativity. There’s no pressure to share on social media. We just need to send each other’s work on a messaging app.

So far, I have lettered with colored pencils, painted, knit and doodled. My friend has watercolored, collaged, baked and doodled. Writing this blog post is today’s entry for the challenge.

If your month or your life feels meh, how do you want to change your story? What actions can you take to make you feel more alive, inspired, joyful.

Maybe it’s inviting your creativity to come over and play through a daily challenge.

Or maybe it’s moving your body.

Maybe it’s pulling up the file of the book you started to write and beginning again.

Or maybe it’s surprising your friends and family with unexpected gifts—a nice break from Zoom calls.

Maybe it’s stepping outdoors (masks on, of course) for a while and breathing in fresh air.

Or maybe it can even be the quiet acceptance that months can sometimes be mundane and that’s okay.

I think that’s what I’ll do for August.
