Tools of my trade

The tools that I need to keep me busy, productive and sane: my Muji planner and favorite Muji pen, an Evernote Moleskine notebook and a Macbook Air

I’m amazed how quickly time is passing.  The last part of 2014 sort of meandered for me with lots of time to fill and a lot of anxiety regarding filling it.  Either I’m more comfortable now with having time on my hands or I’ve gotten busier, but whatever it is, I feel like 2015 is really just zipping by.

So, at the end of every month, I do a review of whether I accomplished what I wanted for the month and try to plan out the things I want to do next.  This little practice should have been done a long time ago when I was an overworked employee but I now have the time to sit and think and it’s been one of the most useful productivity tools for me.

So here’s a look back at the first two months of 2015 (and the names I have come out for them) and what I want to achieve in March:

Just Start January

January started off strong—lots of new projects that I just jumped into.  After some fear in late December and wanting to explore the traditional option of going back to the corporate world, I committed to a four-month consulting project with a friend that focused on what I loved: marketing, brand building and writing.

I also started my life coach training in late January, a process that I’m still continuing today.  I was really nervous with it and surprisingly, wasn’t really good at it.  I’m keeping an open mind and heart around it, noticing especially where I have resistance and leaning into that instead of running away.

Follow-up February

February was all about following up and making sure I continued what I began.  The life coach training was a bit overwhelming with reading and four-hour phone calls to schedule every week.  There were a couple of 12-hour days where I was struggling to find the key insights to the branding campaign I was building.  There was the continuation of social media where I tried to understand insights and deliver better (and better-timed) content.  Then there were bazaars I joined for Knitting Expedition (our little social enterprise) which unfortunately didn’t do as well as they did last Christmas (but we just keep on trucking anyway).

Then of course, I started this blog.

March Momentum

Since I started so much new stuff, lots of things fell by the wayside:  meditation (an on-and-off practice despite my investment in Headspace), any kind of exercise and daily journaling.

So March Momentum is about making space for this: to sustain me when things aren’t as calm or balanced as they are now.

That means:

  • Daily meditation (before I leave the bedroom)
  • Mid-day workout (at least four times a week)
  • Daily journaling
  • Blogging three times a week.
