A lesson from Game of Thrones to apply to your life (no spoilers!)

Like 44 million people around the world, I tuned into the final season of Game of Thrones.

I know it received a lot of mixed reviews but I actually enjoyed it. My favorite episode was “The Long Night,” the third and darkest one, literally, as I had to up the brightness settings on my TV so I could see what was happening.

In it, the good guys (composed of the Stark family and their allies) fight the baddies (the zombie-like wights and White Walkers) headed by the truly fearsome Night King. Because the Night King could resurrect the dead, the good guy army was massively outnumbered and rapidly getting killed off.

In a pause in the fighting, the priestess Melisandre asked Arya Stark, an assassin and the middle child of the Stark family, “What do we say to the god of death?”

Arya’s answer: “Not today.” (And then she proceeded to end the episode with the most badass scene in the whole season.)

**

What do you say to procrastination? Not today.

What do you say to your excuses? Not today.

What do you say to fear? Not today.

What do you say to complacency and mediocrity? Not today.

What do you say to staying small? Not today.

Here’s to being as badass as Arya this June. And may you start whatever it is you’ve been putting off, even if you don’t feel ready, even if you’re scared, even if you’re not feeling motivated, even if you’re too old or too young or too busy or too lazy.  Start today because you want to start living a life your future self will thank you for.
