Before Sunday, my usual morning routine consisted of rolling over to press the snooze button (and then again after nine minutes). Then instead of doing something nourishing and soulful, I would check Instagram, email and go through the news on Flipboard. (I had “do my morning intention” on my habit tracker and managed to only cross off one box in the month.)
There had to be a better way to start the morning. I wanted to make it lovely, loving, mindful and soul-affirming. I wanted a beautiful routine that would make me excited to embrace the day instead of crawling back in bed and staying in my nightgown the whole day.
There is a better way…and it’s called The Miracle Morning.
The Miracle Morning is a system of all good things coaches and self-improvement experts tell you to do but you never make time for. It’s summarized in the acronym S.A.V.E.R.S:
- Silence (meditation, prayer)
- Affirmations (my new favorite: I am open to more good than I have ever experienced or imagined before in my life.)
- Visualization (a vision board or having a clear vision of where you’re headed)
- Exercise
- Reading (a trashy romance novel might not be the best choice for this time)
- Scribing (also known as journaling, which includes writing down the things you’re grateful for)
Because of this system, I’ve been getting up an hour early to do all the practices. This is very weird as I am NOT a morning person (I’ve mentioned before that I’m most effective at dusk). I start with a 10-minute meditation and end with a 10-minute yoga session (which I’m building up to 20 minutes).
I have an accountability partner (also known as my husband) to make sure I stay on track. He will be checking in with me every Sunday night to find out how I did and how I can improve. I’ve also set up a weekly reward system. I’m committing myself to 30 days of Miracle Mornings. I’m in the exciting honeymoon stage and am hoping to make it through the dreary middle part.
Then let’s see the miracles unfold in my life.
