Tips for journaling #1: my favorite tools

journaling tips

Since this month is all about journaling (join my 31-day journaling challenge, it’s not too late, I promise!), I’m sharing some tips throughout the month.

There are really only two tools you need:

1. A journal.

I’ve written in fancy Moleskines, diaries with unicorns and locks on the covers (please remember that I’ve been journaling since I was 10!), freebie notebooks. You truly can write in any type of notebook.

What I prefer though are notebooks with fountain-pen friendly paper (where the ink doesn’t bleed in the back) that’s not lined. One of my favorites is the Leuchtturm brand. This is so my writing doesn’t feel constrained—bold and heavy when I’m feeling emotional, neat and delicate when I’m in a good mood. I can also doodle, paste ephemera, do some cute lettering.

2. A pen you love.

I use a fountain pen, specifically a TWSBI Diamond Mini Clear fountain pen with Extra Fine nib with a dark grey ink. But any pen will do—as long as it makes writing a pleasure for you. Try to avoid the freebies that you picked up in a conference, unless they bring up good memories. Make the tools you use as beautiful as the words that will flow from them.

You only need these two tools, I promise. But if you want to add more fun to your pages, you can also use washi tape (I love the selection here), a date stamp, decorative clear stamps, stickers. While journaling, you can also light a candle to signal that this is a sacred time. Write freely or you can use journaling prompts to guide you.
